John,
Thanks for a really good question.
Prior to ones first visit it is best to solidify in your mind as much information about what you want to have treated and why.
Form in your mind what realistic outcome you would like to have.
Also know your health history really well.

In answer to your thoughts - no one need not drink lots of water prior to a first visit. It is best not to have just had a heavy meal just prior to any visit. A light meal is OK. Surely don't consume any alcohol or drugs.
Talking to your general practitioner is up to you. If he/she knows anything about Chinese medicine it may be helpful, if they don't it may be harmful.
Also just try to be relaxed. This is the most helpful thing.

I hope this answered your questions.

Hi Simeon,

Here's a question for someone who has never done acupuncture: what should I do before my first visit? Drink lots of water? Eat? Don't eat? Talk to my general practioner doctor first? Let me know if there's anything I should be aware of.

Thanks!

Hi Edith,
Thank you for taking the time to write to me. Thank you for the compliment.
I do have a pamphlet that lists some of the things that Acupuncture can treat. However please know that Chinese medicine does not treat western symptoms per se. Chinese medicine practitioners base their treatments on Chinese diagnostic principles and disease patterns.
Please visit my web site for more information. You can access the web site by clicking on the link on the home page of this blog.

I'm constantly amazed by your depth of knowledge. Do you offer a pamphlet listing all of your services & what they treat?

Thank you,
